Analysis of FiberWeigh Infomercial (2003)

FiberWeigh is promoted with a 30-minute infomercial which claims that the product swells enough in the stomach to make the user feel full and therefore eat less. The product contains glucomannan, a soluble fiber that absorbs water. The infomercial includes a demonstration in which two capsules entering the stomach or added to water can form a large gelatinous mass. However, the expanded product occupies less than 1% of the stomach and the demonstration appears to be a fake. Here's the transcript with my comments inserted in bracketed type.

CHUCK WOOLERY: Hi, I'm Chuck Woolery and this is my lovely co-host, Lisa.

LISA: You know, Chuck and I have been sitting here talking about just how hard it is to lose weight.

CHUCK: You're right, Lisa. And we're going to show you how you can lose weight without dieting, changing your eating habits or even exercising. [This claim should arouse suspicion because it is impossible.] And, no, this is not one of those fat-trapper gimmicks or speed-up-your-metabolism products that makes you feel jumpy and out of control. There are no electronic things to attach. It's not a juice or an exercise machine. In fact, it's not even a diet.

LISA: Now, wait a minute, no one is going to believe there's anything that can let you eat what you normally eat, not do additional exercise, and not leave you feeling hungry all the time, that will also help you lose weight.

CHUCK: Well, as a matter of fact, Lisa, there is. You know, I recently lost 40 pounds, and the great news is you can, too.

LISA: Most people are pretty skeptical about weight-loss programs because there are so many fad diets or pills that just didn't do what they claimed. So, this sounds a little too good to be true. [More than a little.]

[The infomercial then displays an animated picture purporting to show how Fiberweigh expands to fill about a third of the stomach as depicted to the right and on the company's Web site. However, a simple experiment I performed showed that the picture is misleading. The volume of the adult stomach is 1.5 to 4 liters (1500 to 4000 cc). When I placed two capsules in water, the contents expanded to only about 15 cc. I don't see how this amount could make anyone feel full. Even if it could, it might not work because many people continue to eat after they feel full.]

CHUCK: Well, that's how I lost weight. I mean, it's exactly—I ate less food and I certainly consumed less calories, right?

MICHAEL: That's right.

CHUCK: This is a great idea and it just makes sense that if you eat smaller portions you lose weight. [Not necessarily. Many small portions can total as many calories as fewer larger ones.] Now, don't forget I lost over 40 pounds in the last few months by just eating smaller portions. [A "few" months is not defined.]

LISA: So, FiberWeigh fills you up like you just had half a meal but with healthy fiber that contains no fat. [As noted above there's no logical reason to believe that the recommended amount of FiberWeigh will expand to fill half the stomach.] What could be easier? And you don't feel hungry after you're done eating?

CHUCK: Lisa makes a good point here, because one of the biggest problems when people try to lose weight with pills or liquids or shakes is that they're hungry all the time. I know when I did that, I was always hungry.

MICHAEL: Right.

CHUCK: And, quite frankly, no one wants to be miserable all the time, and nobody wants to feel hungry after they eat.

MICHAEL: No, you shouldn't feel hungry after you've eaten, and you don't want to be counting the minutes all day waiting for your next meal. You'll actually get up from the table feeling like you've had a normal meal but, in fact, you only ate part of it because your stomach is partially full of healthy fiber. You've taken in less fat calories which will result in losing weight while adding healthy fiber to your diet. [Even if the meal following the use of FiberWeigh is smaller, the user might get hungry again and eat more before the next scheduled meal.]

CHUCK: Tell you what, Michael, let's talk a little bit about fiber here. You hear all the time about how fiber is really supposed to be good for us in so many different ways.

MICHAEL: It's universally accepted that a diet high in fiber and low in fat is the best thing most people can do for their health. It can help lower the cholesterol, keep the colon healthy, and help regulate insulin levels. [It's true having an adequate intake of fiber is a good idea, but exxperts recommend that it come from food rather than from supplements.]

CHUCK: So, even though I lost 40 pounds, most of the people watching right now are probably skeptical about this concept because many of them have bought other weight-loss products in the past. Do you remember there was that fat-trapper type pill and, you know, you take a pill that was supposed to absorb the fat and you could eat all the fatty stuff you wanted and that didn't seem to work?

LISA: I totally remember that one. And then the other ones we talked about that speed up your metabolism.

CHUCK: My personal favorite of all, remember those electric things you placed on your body and you turned this thing up and it just kind of—you know, you really would shake and pull and it was like doing 35 sit-ups in a second and a half?

[Michael would like you to believe that he belongs to a responsible segment of the "weight loss industry."] But there's one simple rule to remember if you really, really want to lose weight: There are only two ways a human body can lose weight: to take in less fat calories that are being used by the body or to burn more fat calories than are being taken into the body. [Not quite. What counts is total calories, not merely calories from fat.]

CHUCK: So, you can either exercise more or take in less fat calories?

MICHAEL: Very good, you understand exactly.

CHUCK: Thank you.

MICHAEL: He's got it, he's got it.

CHUCK: That's right.

MICHAEL: A very, very good point. Most people understand that they need to take in less calories to lose weight, but the fact is that usually requires a major change in eating habits, and that's where we set ourselves up for failure. You see, most of us can't stick to major changes in eating habits, so they either don't lose much weight or eventually gain it all back. MICHAEL: So, you can imagine with that much in your stomach. . .

CHUCK: You would feel full.
